Monday 2 December 2013 45 min Inquiry

Indoor Curling has been known to many people around the world but mostly to the Scottish people. In 1511 Scotland created a sport called curling where you try to get a stone into a ring but there has been a huge difference since then to now.  Later down the track more people started to recognize this unique sport and thats when it really got popular. In the 19th Century the United States got hooked in and is now a olympic sport.

The most popular type of curling is indoor curling where you use a sheet. A sheet is 45.72m and has lots of different points on it, the goal of the game is to push a granite into the middle of the house.

The equipment that you need to play indoor curling are curling shoes, mops, pants, gloves and jackets. If you don't have a local curling rink you can go to a lake where the ice has formed, but make sure the ice is thick! The most needed equipment is a Granite and each one weighs around 20 kgs.

The rules of the game are 2 people hold a mop and one person hold the granite. The job for the people with the mops are to sweep the ice in front of the granite and to reduce friction. The person with the granite has to gently slide the granite into the house and try to get the closest.

Fact 1: When curling was created it was played on top of a frozen lake.
Fact 2: The NZ team won their first game in 1998.

Friday 29 November 2013 45 min Inquiry]\

At the Tauranga Port mrs Mills took a picture of logs that are stacked. These logs come from Asia and are shipped back to them for lots of different uses. The logs are mostly pine trees and we use them for paper, toys ETC. The logs are taken by truck to the port and then they can ship the logs to Asia. Most of the pine tree's come from the northern, east side of the North Island.

The logs are taken onto cargo ships where they are imported to Asia. The port of Tauranga sends about 5.6 million dollars worth of logs each year, thats 14% of their making! Once we collect the pine trees they come by logging trucks and take them into the port of Tauranga. When they get the pine tree's the port stacks them in triangles before taking them onto the cargo ships. The cargo ships take them to asian factories where they make paper ETC, but is is not that environmentally good.

Wednesday 27 November 2013 45 Min Inquiry

The four pictures are of a Totem Pole, Inuit Boots, Tiki and a Boomerang.

The Inuit boots are originated from greenland and are worn by Arctic aboriginal people. The are made from seal skin or reindeer hide, they wear them to be more warm and silent when hunting preys.  They look like very high boots and have art painted on them.

The other photo was of a Totem Pole. They are made by Native Americans with the trunk of a Thuja Plicata tree. They paint them with red and white paint and place them in forests.

The Tiki is a large wooden carving or by stone. They are made by Maori's in New Zealand and they are mostly named after the Maori gods. They are placed inside Whare's which are a traditional place where Maoris sleep and do kapahaka performances.

The last picture is of a Boomerang  that are a wooden throwing tool. They are made flat and designed to spin. Once you throw it it circles back around to the thrower. The Australian Aborigines use them for hunting but most of us use it for entertainment. It is one of the icons of Australia.

What all of these have in common are that they are indigenous to all these tribes.

45 min Bow Hunting

Last Saturday Mrs Mills went to Huntly to bow hunt for koi carp. She was hunting them because they are a pest. They eat native fish and their eggs. They pollute the water by stirring up the mud and it kills native trees. Koi carp can grow up to 80cm and can weigh up to 10kg.

Mrs Mills went bow hunting last weekend because the koi carp were spawning (breeding) and they come into the shallows to do this.

Bow hunting is a sport that requires a bow and arrow. You also need a line attached to the arrow so you can retrieve the fish and arrow. You do not need a license in NZ to bow hunt. It has been around since the Victorian era.

Mrs Mills caught 6 koi carp. She didn’t throw them back into the water because you can receive a fine.  She left them on the side of the lake and they were taken by some fishermen.

Which Button Would you Push and Why?

I would push the grey button because of how easy life would be. I would wake up and pick up my toothbrush. Whenever I am lying down in my bed I would just fly my breakfast into the bed but there are some disadvantages. You would become really lazy and you would not take anything seriously.

Beyond the Story Competion

I looked across the shore line of Somalia as the sun beamed into my grey dusty glasses. I turn around to see the satellite. I can see a small red dot coming towards our giant, red rusty boat. The clear blue waves crash against the boat with no effect. It was exactly 12:35 and I knew that the coast of Somalia was known for pirates. BANG!

Four men with AK-47s bust through the door like a wrecking ball.
“Get on the Ground!”
I dive down on my hands and knees and start to crawl to the radio but suddenly a gun pushes against the back of my sweaty head.
“Stand up!”
I slowly turn around like a turtle and stand up. When I was half way from standing up I saw an emergency card that had the diagram of a life boat located at the back of the giant MV Maersk Alabama. I grab the rusty desk that is in front of me and pull myself up.
All of my crew in front of me. Terrified. Scared. I couldn’t stand to see them like this. I think to myself that I am the captain and I have to do something.
“Where is the money?”
“I haven't got any.”
Suddenly one of the pirates grabs their gun and sprays bullets into the air leaving holes above us causing light to flood in.
“WHERE IS THE MONEY?”
All of my crew put there hands up all at the same time.
“I don't have any.”
I try to say it in the most convincing way possible when I know there is a safe underneath the table.
“Fine. You choose captain. Either I kill all of your crew or I take you with us and keep you until we get to shore?”

A hot drop of sweat slowly crawled down the side of my face. It got caught by the cold thin barrel of the black AK-47. This was the end. There I stood with my hands in the air waiting for the sound of death. Then someone grabbed me viciously and pulled me out of the room. All four of the pirates and me ran to the lifeboat leaving my crew behind. I was being dragged like a dog trying to get away from a needle. He threw me in the lifeboat and my head crashed against the side of the seat. The boat looked like a small peanut but more disgusting. There was beef jerky and a life jacket neatly tucked under the bright orange driving seat. As the pirates hopped on I looked out the window to see my crew trying to call for help but they looked like they were struggling.

The sound of the motor whirred and rumbled the boat. We raced off, crashing through the waves and I wasn’t sure if anyone would find me but the only thing I could do was lie there and hope for the best. It had been an hour but it felt like I was slowly dying by burning ashes. Suddenly, a pirate stood up with an idea.
“Why don’t we use the radio to get more security when we get off?”
I looked up with anxiety to see the four pirates looking at each other like they had won lotto.

Suddenly wind started to gush against my back, but I could hear a swishing above us. I quickly look out the window to see a chopper circling us. My crew really did call for help. That made me have some hope but only an inch.

Days and days go on and every single one is worse and worse. On the third day even the pirates look like they can't take more but one of the pirates keeps on telling them to not give up and that we can make it to shore. We were all out of food and none of us could go on. It was happening again; the end was coming but there was something else coming towards us. I could see a black life boat with five other men and they were all carrying guns. This was my ticket back home, I didn't know if I was seeing things or it was real but It made me feel more alive.

Waimarino Why other schools should go

On the 7th of November our class went to Waimarino for a class trip. There are many reasons why other schools should go to Waimarino but the main reasons are children would manage themselves, relate to others, think, use signs and text and participate in activities.

When we got there we first got a kayak each and paddled out to the river. Once we all got out there we rafted up in a circle while grabbing other peoples kayaks, then we had to think. Then we learnt what to do when you fall out of a kayak and how to get back in. We also played a game of sharks and fish. Then we all got out and had a shivering lunch.

After lunch we went to do the water activities. There was the Tarzan Swing, UFO, Gladiator Pole, Blob, Diving board and Hydro slide. When we were there It was pouring down with rain so we didn't have to get in the water to get wet. We had to use signs and text to get on activities because there was signs on each activity then once we got on we had to relate to others.

The weather started to clear up but that was the end of the day. I think other schools should go visit Waimarino because of the fun activities and the things you learn. When we were there the weather wasn't the best but we still had heaps of fun. I hope that Waimarino will keep improving and I know that Im coming back.

Bee's Attacking TIS!

Today at lunch we saw a huge swarm of bee's covering the rose plant outside our classroom. When bee's swarm, it's when the queen bee decides to move to a new hive so they leave there old one and she takes 60% of the workers with her. You can see in the picture all of the bee's on the rose bush and they have just started to make their hive. I think that this is the new attraction to Tauranga Intermediate School, but hopefully they get rid of it.

Book Response 3

The Hobbit The Unexpected Journey

Written by J.R.R Tolkien

This book the 'Hobbit The Unexpected Journey' was written by J.J.R Tolkien and was placed in England. You could really imagine the places they went because of the detail they put into all of the scenes and what the people did. This book made me think about how helping other people could do you a favor to yourself. The character Bilbo changed throughout this book because he realized that he was thinking about himself going back to his home and that the dwarves were trying to get their's back. I liked how the author put the smallest detail about everything like when the Orcs were trying to kill the dwarves and the author was talking how the birds would fly away with fear. I think this book showed me to do what I think is right.

Norm Hewitt One Of The Family

Today Norm Hewitt came to our school to talk about what happened in his life and to go for your dreams. He talked about when you treat your animal with respect he will give you respect back. The '5 freedoms' that he was always talking about was shelter, food and water, exercise, love and vet care. It was all about how a SPCA animal could be in your family and you should care about them. The things that he did n his life time were pro dancing in 'Dancing With The Dance' and playing hooker in the All Blacks. He talked about when he was young and how his dad would come home drunk and would hit his brothers, sisters and mum and how he ran out and hugged his favourite horse tommy and hid in the bushes. He had 3 pets, there was his cat Fluffy and his 2 dogs Storm and Trixie.

HughY Setting and Story Opening

=================================================================================
The smell of the oil creeps around my face as I hear gun fire. The cold chilled air runs down my spine as I swiftly across to the other building. The green glow from my headlight just gives me vision to see through the dim light. I jump over the table just before the enemy detects me. The garage is filled with cars for me to hide behind. I feel the rubber handle on my pistol as I screw on the cold, slippery silencer.
=================================================================================

WALT: describe the setting of a story using ‘show’ not ‘tell’
SC:
- to use descriptive language to help the reader visualise the setting
- to use language that activates the readers’ senses e.g smell and sound
- to use similes and metaphors to describe the setting

- to use interesting vocab to describe the setting

1. Gun fight

2. Glow from my headlight, slippery silencer & enemy detects me

3. B

4. It was obvious that it was a gunfight, but I think that was because you told me instead of showing me.

HughY Dangerous Decibels

Today we had a dangerous decibel lesson and we learnt lots of stuff about whats good for your ear and whats not. The most important thing about decibels is to keep the level of vibration 85. A fact that I learnt is that birds, frogs and fish can all repair their hearing. When I get home I am going to use headphones more than earbuds because earbuds sends sound waves strait into your ear drum.

A Most Triumphant Tale 2013

In the production the most triumphant tale I was part of the lighting crew with Ryan, Felila and Jarlan.
Me and Ryan were controlling the right spotlight while Felila and Jarlan were controlling the other side.
We first had to learn how to use the spotlight and it was fairly simple because on the toop was three levers, the first one turned it off and on, the second one was we were told not to touch and the last one was the size which we had to change now and then if there was more than one person like the boys choir and the surpremes.

By Thursday we pretty much knew every single line that the actresses had to say because we had a script on what and when to put a spotlight on a person. We would have one person wearing the headset and controlling the spotlight so Mrs Mills can tell what coming up through the headset.
My favorite act was the Motown boys/boys choir because there vocals were really good and they all looked very confident.

The story was about a band called Labyrinth losing all their band members so they travel back to the past and try to find more band members for Labyrinth.

Book Response 3

This book name is Assassins Creed Revelations.
The author is Oliver Bowden.

I chose this book because I have the game and I really do enjoy it. I also I want to visit Italy in the future and in the back of the book it says Italian Words.

A quick summary of this book: Ezio is a assassin in Venice. He is friends with Leonardo-Di-Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli. He sets on a journey on water with his dads old friend to Rome and Naples to stop the templars from reaching Venice and starting a war. In one of the paragraphs the author has lots of great description”The eagle still wheeled in the sky. A pale blue sky, bleached by the sun” When you look at the book it seems really boring but its worth the money because you can't judge a book by its cover.

Book Response 2

Pouakai the Man Eater

This book is about giant bird who comes into the village and a man who tries to kill it. The man who tried to the bird name is Ruru. Ruru is a pro bird catcher and he provides the food for the village. Ruru was a brave man and everyone in his village had lots of respect for him.

One day some of the men that collect cocoa beans for the village got taken by the mighty huge Pouakai bird, some of the men came back to the village and some were taken by Pouakai. Ruru had to fix this problem so he decided to get a group of strong villagers and try to defeat the mighty Pouakai. I liked this book because it was easy for me to visualize where and what was going on, also the author of the book described Pouakai very well. The title of the book was very important because I could tell what type and how the book was going to be.

Altogether the book was very good. I’d like to read other stories from this author because of what types of novels he writes and that we writes NZ stories.

Book Response 1

Assassin's Creed Revelations

This book is a story about a normal person who is an orphan and became an assassin. He is now friends with Leonardo Davinci Shakespere. He is travelling by sea to kill all the templars so they don’t take over france.

This author has used very good detail (The sea crashed into the boat like a rabbit trying to get a carrot.) This book also has some french words in the back so if you don’t know what something means you can learn a french word. If you like history and action this is the book for you.

I’d like to read other books from this author because its not only a fiction story but its a history and information book. This book made me think back in time to visualize the setting (The eagle flew over the mossy crowded castle.) I would rate this book 4 out of 5 because of the different style of book than a normal book.

Cross Country 2013

Monday 24 June 2013

Today was the 2013 Cross Country and I came 146th place. Last year I came 157 and I think I improved alot. When the gun went off everyone ran as fast as they could and some people even tripped up. First the year seven girls went off and next was the year seven boys, the year 8 girls were next and the year 8 boys followed. The highlight was when I  saw Lachlan coming first and finishing. I felt very tired at the end and I think that this was one of the best Cross Countries I've done.

CSI Reading-Zombie Outbreak

I was in the zombie outbreak, on the news the reporter said that you need to start getting ready and making sure to lock the doors. I looked outside and I saw my neighbor getting eaten by a zombie that was kept by the zombie outbreak center where they kept all of the diseased zombies. I quickly went downstairs to grab some equipment to kill the zombie but all I had was a knife and some empty cans, so I couldn’t do anything. I decided to go try find some better weapons or food so I don’t end up getting killed by a zombie.

I grab my car keys to my yellow jeep and drove off quickly so no zombie see’s me. Thump, Thump, every two seconds I run over a zombie and the blood splatters over my windshield, I finally got to countdown where I slowly walk in checking if any zombies there waiting for me. I grab some lollies and some cans of beans, as I grab some beef jerky out of the corner of my eye I spot a zombie running towards me so I grab my knife out and throw it right at his head and just as I kill it I hear the automatic doors open

I check who or what it could be and see a man with a large beard and a shotgun in his hands. He suddenly grabs my hand and shakes it hard, I could tell that he came for food to so I gave him some of the cans and he asked me if I needed help so thats how I ended up driving in his giant truck going to the gun shop.

When we got to the gun store there was no one there that was surprising so I grabbed the biggest gun I could find which ended up being a huge double barrel shotgun. We walk slowly towards the exit when suddenly we hear a loud scream, we run to the truck and drive off wondering who that was.

Camp happinings

Camp Happenings

The funniest happening on camp was when we made our raft and matt stood up and started to dance, he fell on Ryan and he got pushed off so we left him behind.

The biggest challenge on camp was when I had to climb up the centipede
because it is a long ladder spinning around.

The scariest happening on camp was when I was doing the Posties walk and when I had to do a 360 in the middle, I nearly fell.

The most exhausting moment was when I got to the top of the centipede. I told myself that I had to keep on going and I eventually made it.
Russell  made it up the V-Playpen and the girls did also, so we ended up having to do 20 press ups.

The most dangerous moment was when cole farted right beside me when we were sitting around the fire, I thought someone had taken a number 2 in there pants..

3 things I learnt- I learnt how to make a Damper on a fire. I also learnt how to make a good standing bivouac with only 2 sheets, Pegs and some rope.
2 things I was surprised about- I was surprised that I did everything there and I am proud of myself.
I question I still have is if i’ll ever come back to the camp?

Maths
